Chapter 7

C heri wore her thickest socks and her most comfortable shoes and still her feet ached with a dull throb that radiated up her legs. She shouldn’t have chased down the purse snatcher, but her cop instinct had taken over. Now, she stood in the shadows of the jewelry store with Bolton and waited until he thought it time to break in.

Every time she fidgeted, Bolton glared at her feet and sighed. She knew what he thought without him saying a word. She’d been an idiot and too stubborn to let him do this on his own. Now, she was paying for that stubbornness with pain.

She jerked at the sound of the store’s back door being closed, then the click of a deadbolt. Finally, the store manager as heading home. Who worked that late? She peered through the dim light to see Dillow come into sight and stroll toward a jacked-up truck. The man sure seemed to be everywhere. Very suspicious.

She glanced over at Bolton. His features looked forged in steel. His mind obviously traveled the same path of thoughts hers did.

Once Dillow drove away, Bolton said, “Come on. Let’s get this over with. All we have to do is trigger the alarm and get caught. Then, whoever sent us the warning will know we didn’t pay attention.”

Which meant the target on their backs just tripled in size. Cheri nodded, pulled a ski mask over her face, and followed a masked Bolton around to the back of the building.

He pulled a set of lock picking tools from his pocket. She ought to stop him. Since becoming partners in the burglary case, she’d turned a blind eye to law breaking, even joining in. Her supervisor would have a coronary once Small Oak’s chief-of-police filled him in once the burglar was caught. Still, she’d jumped in with both feet. There was no turning back now.

Bolton inserted the tools into the lock and worked until they heard a loud click. Then, the sirens blared. “Come on. We have to be inside when the police arrive.” He led the way to a jewel case and broke the glass.

Cheri cringed and glanced up. Dillow grinned from the other side of the window. He waved and drew his gun. Playing security guard again? Just as Cheri started to duck, police sirens wailed their approach.

Dillow lowered his gun and ran. So, not a security guard. “I wonder what he was doing here with a key?”

Officers barged through the back door. “Hands up. Drop your weapons.”

And, just like that, Cheri found herself back in a holding room, handcuffed to a bar attached to the wall. She leaned her head against the wall and waited to be released. She now knew without a doubt that Dillow was involved. In fact, the man seemed to have his fingers in several cookie jars. She needed to focus on laying a trap for him rather than a face she didn’t know.

Since he turned up everywhere she and Bolton were, it shouldn’t be too difficult.
